The devs reported that they are using a new engine, Forge Light, for both Planetside 2 and EverQuest Next, which should "allow for massive seamless worlds, advanced atmospheric effects, and more. Reportedly, this technology is built from the ground up, and should be used alongside NVIDIA's PhysX real time physics system.
Things to look forward to in Planetside 2 are a new conquest map, versatile topography, as well as a massive open world combat where thousands of players can literally carry out the most epic of battles.
Central to the storyline of the game will be the struggle and competition over the vast resources, such as empire control areas. Players will also have to control said resources, which they will need in order to be able to upgrade weapons, armors, vehicles, etc.
Also confirmed to make a comeback in the franchise are all the empires, but this time coming with new tools and tactics. There are also new combat roles, as well as new opportunities for class upgrade.
Apart from that, a new time-based unlock system got unveiled for Planetside 2. Essentially, it's a system akin to EVE Online's, wherein players are allowed to move on with their game, even when they are offline. This way, it's also easier for them to keep up with the events that their friends are enjoying when they're too busy tending to the real world.
Planetside 2 is SOE's much-awaited sequel to the franchise, which has been put on hold since the company layoffs that pushed back and hindered the game's development.
