Richard Garriot becomes $32 million dollars richer from NCSoft |

For those of you out there who are MMO fans, you may know the name Richard Garriot, the rest of you may not. Tabula Rasa, a fairly interesting sci-fi MMORPG, created by Garriot was created a year or two ago by Garriot and the team at NCSoft. Garriot “left the project” to work on other things and before he knew it the developers cut the service which didn't really sell all to well. However in May 09, Garriot sued NCSoft claiming he was removed from his game rather than leaving.
The publisher was sued even harder when Garriot made a financial claim and upped the claims saying he was deprived of any profits on his stock options which he kept after leaving NCSoft. Garriot was awarded 28 million and NCSoft appealed the ruling but the three-judge panel held up the ruling and tacked on interest and attorney fees to compensate Garriot even more pushing that 28 to 32 million.
"NCSoft schemed to avoid its obligations to [Garriott] at the trial court and on appeal, and neither the jury nor the 5th Circuit bought any of it," Garriott's lead counsel Stephen E. Fox said. "Contracts have consequences, and as the Court of Appeals explained, the trial court is not a trial run."
I have no real opinion on this case as I'm not a fan of MMO's, Garriot or any legal discourse which one day may or may not screw me if I ever make anything worthwhile. For now, I just don't want to get sued for slander. Garriot is leading his own social game movement that specializes in card games...I like card games, please don't sue.
