What Bragg did was discover that by manually altering URL's he could cause land auctions which weren't supposed to be on the block yet to start prematurely, without the normal minimum bid, and with him the only one bidding. He didn't obtain the land legitimately. He used an exploit. He's not much of a criminal mastermind however, since what he did is akin to sneaking into a bank late at night and transferring all the money to his account. Predictably, he was caught, banned, and his ill gotten gains were seized along with any other Second Life assets he had (as per the Terms of Service that he agreed to when joining). His first case (this is the second) was presumably thrown out (amid hails of laughter).
