Pirates of the Burning Sea beta: 7-on-7 ship battle |

It wasn't the 25-on-25 they hoped to test out - BUG ALERT! - but the Flying Lab Software and beta boys managed a 7-on-7 scrap that proved to be as exciting as Master and Commander, or Pirates of the Carribean minus the mysticism stuff (and if you can tear your eyes of Keira Knightley for more than ten seconds). Arr, we digress. On to the beta journal.
We be talking about seven of the mighty barks of her Majesty's Britannic Fleet, matey, lined against a bold gaggle of pirate ships. This be a more or less real-time (or semi-real time?) battle of wits and naval strategy, as the well-coordinated British fleet began to pick off and harass stragglers from the pirate fleet. The Royal Navy also be having fair winds at their back, which robbed the pirates of their speed and maneuverability advantage.
Aye, but the mind of a pirate is a devious and clever one. At a signal the pirate ships turned and fled away from the battle, with the British ships giving chase. But were they fleeing, the dev journal asks rhetorically. Nay, the devious pirates made fast to round a landmass, and force the British to come at them from the other direction - against the winds. And as the fleets converged once more to trade broadsides and send each other to Davy Jones' locker...
BAM! Bug alert! All players were thrown off the battle instance and returned to the nearest friendly port. Dang, but that's what the beta test is for, right? Anyway, beyond that, this little sneak peek into a naval battle in Pirates of the Burning Sea already quickens the hearts of the landlocked sailors of this motley crew of QJ writers, threatening to unleash our inner Admiral Nelsons onto the high seas. At the least, it shows an appreciation for the battle tactics of the Age of Sail, and a demand for proper coordination within the fleet.
No wonder Games for Windows mag's loving this game. Arr, it be a pirate's life for me!
