New Star Trek Online Details Emerge - Image 1

On August 10, Star Trek Online will be officially unveiled to the world at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas (Leonard Nimoy is the main speaker, in case you haven't heard yet). The developers will be showing off actual game footage - not concept art, not renders, but actual gameplay.

A Star Trek MMO has been long overdue, I think, but now that one is actually nearing completion (near enough to show gameplay footage), I wonder if it will be able to give justice to the series? Well, the screenshots they revealed earlier certainly impressed me. But maybe these handful of new details we got will help you answer the question for yourself.

According to Jack Emmert, Chief Creative Officer ot Cryptic, revealed that players will begin as a captain of a small Starfleet or Klingon Empire ship. You can customize your character from pre-existing Star Trek species - such as Klingons and Gorn - or you can even create new alien races. As you progress in the game, you'll gain larger vessels and a larger crew.

Star Trek Online will be set at the time after the last Star Trek film, so while there may be a ship called Enterprise flying around, it may not be manned by any familiar faces. The game will be massive, if I'm reading Emmert's words right:

You'll venture through space exploring new civilizations and life-forms. You'll also beam down to planets and have adventures inside your ship. It's a galactic-wide game. There's going to be tons of space to investigate. We have a great system for exploration, which will allow for almost infinite possibilities.
