MIT developing educational MMO |

While I personally think that the MMO Industry is dying on it's feet there are still brave people who are investing into it. One such example are the wonderful people at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who have recently put forth a plan to create an original MMO with a $3 million dollar price tag with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
Yes, the guys at MIT will be developing a massive multiplayer game to teach students math and biology in high school classes. The Eductional MMO will contain task-based strategies with achievements to help teachers have an idea on how much students are really learning from the game and the process of learning.
MIT Associate professor, Eric Klopfer is also the director of Education Arcade and the Scheller Teacher Education Program. He explains the genre of MMO's as "uniquely suited to teaching the nature of science inquiry" as MMO's "provide collaborative, self-directed learning situations." Klopfer also talks of the classes in the game as players can be scientists, engineers and mathematicians who explore the game's "robust" world.
According to MIT's press release, Klopfer will be working closely with the team from Filament Games and a small number of Boston students and teachers who will help in the pilot phase of the project in Spring of this year. The game is apparently going to be a 3 year project with 10,000 users across the US.
The Education Arcade has developed 15 games in the past for educational purposes and Klopfer sounds like he knows what he's talking about. So Godspeed to them and their players for a hopefully gamification world of tomorrow.
