Final Fantasy 14 casts Subscription Spell

Final Fantasy 14 has had a bit of a rough start this year and now it looks like it might get a little rougher for the Squenix MMO. The game started out as Free to Play and it looks like a subscription service isn't far off. The game has apparently had a few bugs and poor design decisions, people are placing bets on it's demise.

Squenix then took the best action possible and suspended the subscription fees while it fixed the game, which may be next month. As of January 2012, players will have a chance to buy subscripton time for a discounted price. After that the free-to-play game will be going pay-to-play.

January 6th will be the day when the game will need your money. $6.99 for 30 days, $17.96 for 90 days, $29.94 for 180 days, and so on and so forth. I think the game will be lucky to go for 180 days after January 6th. Square Enix's last MMORPG, number 11 in the series, was a successful game financially and fan-wise, but they are trying to capture lightening in a bottle and it seems that the bottle is slightly cracked and has a bit of dirt on it's outside.

So maybe try the game free now and see if it's worth it later down the line, you have less than a month...

The game started out as a paid subscription and quickly went to a Free 2 Play format because of the backlash from the community about how the game was still basically a beta. I think that they have done quite enough to fix the game and have gotten to a point where they should be able to charge for the game.

I think it is funny that you think the game will be "lucky" to last 180 days after Jan. 6th. It has lasted a year so far after its rough start, do you honestly think that it will just die this year? The Pay 2 Play model was supposed to start late Nov. or Early Dec. this year, but they pushed it back I guess.

Do I think they released a beta of the game and tried to make ppl pay for it? Yes.
DO I think they tried to make amends for this mistake and right a wrong? Yes.

Will the game die after Jan. 6th? Yes, Everything dies sometime down the road.

Not 180 days though, lol. longer then that.

I also forgot to say that I think 30 bucks for 6 months is quite a deal if you ask me, as is 6.99 for 30 days. Those prices will attract customers too, as its cheaper then anything out now (afaik of anyways). SOme people who have played before and want to continue to play may look at it as, Hey! at least my wallet isn't getting raped.

Erm, maybe i'm misunderstandin g what you're saying, but the prices you listed isn't anything related to what they're offering at all...

It's $13.00 a monthly for one character slot, and $1.00 after that for each character slot, if I'm not mistaken...

Not I that gave the prices, just what the article writer posted. Personally I don't know what the prices are, but I assumed they would be what you said since it is more in line with FFXI.

This game will most likely go F2P again because there will be a lack of players and why would I pay monthly when there is free games like Lineage 2 out or millions of other free MMO's out.
