Second Life mapHumor us for a while: what if MMO Second Life gets so popular it becomes the life? When you really think about, it isn't so far a possibility. With a teeming economy, not to mention each aspect falling to their rightful places, Linden Lab's MMO is already home to to over a million residents. The moment a virtual world reaches this number of subscribers, making news and noise on the real world is already a given.

Internet metrics company Hitwise reported that the traffic for Second Life grew an astonishing 219% for the week ending October 21 as compared to the same period last year. Also, Hitwise said that internet searches for "second life" increased 73% for the above mentioned week. Participating and interested groups are of 45 years old and below.

Take note that while traffic doesn't translate to membership, the conducted study proves that word is finally getting out for Second Life. Apparently, like the study also implies, visitors keep on coming back to the virtual world as the game allows them to trade its currency for real estate, not to mention make friends, take classes and hold business meetings.

Numbers off, residents angry

At most 12k ppl have been online in Second Life at any given time. Second Life CFO just raised the island prices by a heafty 51%. Angering 99% of the population. If your going to tell it, tell it all. Do not join SL at this time, no improvements to the program have been made to justify a 51% increase in fees. This program is mainly for advertizing big business. Not a game, not for regular mmorpg players.

Feeling used by SL

Me and other SL customers are feeling used right now for helping add to their big biz enticement. At the beginning of the summer SL relaxed the account restrictions to allow anyone and everyone to become a member. Before, credit card info was required per each account. Now multitudes are creating alternate avatars and griefing others with no recourse, underaged kids are everywhere, and recently hacks have been discovered that caused major problems. All of this was done to reach the 1 millionth customer plateau, congrats SL. And whats the first thing we notice after this milestone is met? Nissan is in-game giving away free Sentras and now SL is raising prices. What's next?

refuting the ignorant

First off, SL is still great, I don't care what the guy who posted twice above me says.

Secondly, they are quite wrong to say that the numbers never go above 12000. They reach over 13000 almost every night, if only for a little while. This weekend concurrency reached the next millenium above that.

SL's pretty damn good

I've been on SL since Dec 2005 - not a business or island owner, just any ordinary SL guy. I am still amazed at how much fun this world is, how many things there are to do, how many fun people there are to meet, and how amazingly inexpensive it is.
Sure, there are occasional problems, crashes, griefing, but that's only 2% of MY experience in-world.
I'd definitely recommend checking it out !!
