Dreamlords Overview Plus Other Fantasies |
Ó
In Dreamlords you assume the role of a Dreamlord in the control of a patria. A patria is a chunk of land floating in the universe with its own population and various natural resources. This will serve as your base of operations. As the patria grows, more choices must be made. Your skills are required to focus your strategy, be it might through force, cunning, alliances or some other means. Everything is allowed in the war for existence.
Game Designer for Dreamlords, Marcus Andrews, gives us an overview of what to expect from Lockpick Entertainment's MMORTS or a massively multiplayer online real-time strategy game. He begins by telling us the system requirements for the game which are a PC with a pixel shader 1.1 graphics card and an internet connection. In other words an average gaming computer. However, since the game is still in the development stage this is still subject to change.
No matter how many times it's been asked before, the question of where the idea for the game came about, has always yield very interesting answers. "Dreamlords came about when we had an internal week long workshop at Lockpick on what game to produce. We choose Dreamlords before many other interesting concepts mainly because of the originality and the possibility to publish it through digital distribution," says Andrews. That clears it then, it didn't come to them in a dream.
But before we dish out more dream puns, a lot of you may already be wondering what exactly a Dreamlord is. According to Andrews, it is more of a title rather than a direct character in the game. It is the role that the players assume when they play. Dreamlord equals you equals omniscient. As he puts it, "The Dreamlord itself is rarely in the game, the player is the Dreamlord in a more abstract way. The Dreamlord itself can learn traits that have effect on the different aspects of strategy. The major part of abilities however belongs to your troops. Let’s say you research the unit “preacher”. That is really level 0 of that unit.
You can then continue to research several abilities for this preacher all the way to the extent where you have more abilities then the preacher can handle. The player can then equip the preacher with the abilities you think heÂ’ll need for your upcoming battle, do you want a melee preacher or a healing preacher? This system provides a way to customize your units before every battle. The armor and weapon system works the same way."
There were a lot of other things that Andrews can't discuss at the moment like future features for the game, how much the monthly fee will be and the exact date of release. He can only give a release date window of 2006.
