At Connect 2008, Codemasters and Turbine Inc. celebrated the two year anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons Online by giving a short preview of what to expect in the future. In addition to adding a new class, the developers also plan on putting in a tribute to the late Gary Gygax and the possible implementation of both housing and crafting as well as news on a sequel.
The new class the developers showed off at the event is the Monk which is scheduled to make an appearance in the Mod 7 update. A cross between the Shaolin Monk and the standard monk class from the tabletop roleplaying game, the class mainly focuses on hand-to-hand combat. In addition, the class will be getting proficiencies with the quarterstaff and exotic weapons like a Kukri or Shuriken.
Since the Monk is still in its pre-alpha phase, expect quite a number of changes to be made to it before it hits the live servers. Additionally, the developers might even decide to throw in some mandatory alignments and restrictions if it ends up being a little too powerful.
The developers have also given word that they will be adding a few tributes to the late Gary Gygax, the co-creator of the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop RPG. The first tribute, Voice of the Master, is a trinket which gives players a small boost to experience. The second is the addition of a gravestone in one of the in-game graveyards.
There was also some discussion on both guild housing and crafting. Apparently, both features are already being looked at by the developers. Guild housing is tentatively scheduled for a 2009 launch while crafting will be in development for the whole year.
Finally, the developers have let slip that there are no plans for a sequel just yet. This is great news for players who've invested a lot of time in the game and don't want the player-base to be split up by a newer game.
