Community unrest ensues with EVE Online Capital Ship change proposal

EVE Online - Image 1

It's common knowledge that it takes up a lot of time, energy, and dedication to excel at MMORPGs - even more so when you're playing EVE Online, a game that demands weeks, even months, of hard work to get to the good parts (and in EVE Online's case, getting to pilot a huge and powerful Capital ship). It's not surprising, then, that a lot of players cried foul when the developer staff of CCP Games proposed a change to the ships themselves, one that could render the space-trekking behemoths vulnerable to attack.

So, what do the guys over at CCP Games want to happen? Zulupark, a newly-instated game designer, says that their demands are simple and really not that major. His statement, taken as is:

What we want is pretty basic: We want to make fighter wielding capital ships more reliant on their support fleet and less of a direct über deathbringer.

We feel that capital ships are being used way too much as better-than-battleships-at-killing-stuff ships, when we in fact think that they should be used more as the-ships-that-keep-other-ships-alive and provide-them-with-additional-firepower ships.

The lack of terminology for the different kinds of ships aside, it really doesn't make any sense that CCP Games wants to power down something that every player sees as the light at the end of the tunnel - a long, hard, grinding tunnel, so to speak. And with the amount of work it takes to get into EVE Online, and much more to master it, being able to use a Capital Ship to rain destruction upon your enemies is as good as a reward as any.

And what do the players say about this? As with any changes that have long-reaching effects, mixed reactions that vary from the positive to the incoherently-negative have been dealt out. Of course, there's also no need to get carried away, as Zulupark reminds players that it is merely just a proposal, after all. Here's hoping, then, that the right decision will be made.

First, I play EvE. Second, the reaction of the EvE community to this proposal goes way over the top. To be honest, what the devs have proposed is rationale given their attempt to keep any ship from becoming Uber. Also it's completely unrealistic to assume that any ship the size of a carrier could or would operate indepently. A quick look at the makeup of a US carrier fleet would prove my point. It takes a major logistical commitment to keep a carrier afloat and safe from attack. That say however, EvE really isn't conducive to fleet ops. Given the current game mechanics it would take way too much work, way too much coordination and way, way, way too much time to do this. This simplest approach would be to simplfy fleet ops so players would want to travel in large fleets. One thing the devs could do would be to allow fleet commanders quickly organize fleets into preset formations. With the click of a mouse all the ships in a gang would move to specific locations. This would cut down considerably on the organization required for fleet ops. If they do this, then they can build a case for requiring carriers to travel with a support fleet.
