Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures - lag makes siege almost unplayable |
Ó
Followers of Crom believe that the god gave us the strength when we were born to overcome any foe. Well, apparently, they've never had to face opponents while lagging in Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures. The first siege on the Deathwhisper server took place this morning at 6 A.M. and it seems that the lag made the instance almost unplayable.
A poster from the Sinister Forums gave a blow by blow account of the problems they encountered with the siege system of the game with lag being on top of the list. There were around 90 players engaged in the battle and the framerate was said to have dropped to " a solid 2-3 fps."
Before you go bashing the poster by saying that he might be running a low end system, note that he was packing a quad core 2.4 GHZ system with 2 GB of RAM and an 8800 GT. A setup which can run the game at a solid 40 to 60 FPS under "normal circumstances."
In addition to the lag, here are some of the other problems that other players reported:
- The 48 vs 48 doesn't work for shit. Its like 96 ppl per zone and LoTD had the usual zerg there (including PRX, DDH) what blocked a good amount of our guys out. If the zone is full and you die it just kicks ya out and resses you at a random gy in the world. After the first ppl got locked out/ressed out I would guess it was around 60 defenders against 36 attackers in this siege.
- Siege machines dont work.
- The Keeps themselves are bugged as hell...you can walk by walls, through walls, through buildings and stuff.
- Theres only one gy for the attackers which is so far off that it ain't funny.
- Merc system doesn't work, you have to guildhop to help your allies, whats stupid and annoying.
- The lag...its insane, beyond everything you can imagine. On my computer i couldn't move a step, on macs computer thats really good I had a kickass 5 fps.

it takes them time to get all of the bugs worked out just be patient thats why I just do solo/group quests for now until DX10 comes out and I'm sure the lag fixes will be out by then.
Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of people who understand that. Personally, I've been doing the same thing. The moment my main hits 80, I'm going to start training an alt until the developers can get the all the fixes in place.
Well I stopped AoC for a few days because I had family visiting...then wanted to play for a few mins again last night when i saw the whopping 271mb patch it was trying to download. Sadly I live in a country that has capped bandwidth...either way it was starting to irk me a bit anyway.
I'm sick of the bugs that I had (and that was only from soloing)...it has a lot of potential but I'm not willing to go through the teething period with them especially when a GM fails to respond to any of my problems (4 times and I was online for a minimum of 3 hours a pop after petitioning them). When they've enhanced the transportation (the running is ridiculous - allow me to transport between the rezz points I've found) - corrected all of the quests and implemented a better patch system (one where I can download a single file on another machine to copy and install on my machine) then maybe I'll give it another try. Such a shame too...seems to me like they should rather have waited before releasing - increased the beta player pool or something.
Ultimately (apart from the promise of greater things and a pretty unique melee combat system) it's friekin' WoW again - another timesink hoping you'll pay to play for a very long time before you can progress...but at least WoW was able to tempt me with the nice looking items unlike the bland items in AoC.
So yeah - I do care about AoC otherwise I wouldn't have bothered typing all of this in - unfortunate that it's filled with so many bugs that should NEVER have released...or maybe it's just my own fault for wanting to be an early adopter (aka Paying beta tester).
You made a lot of valid points. Granted the game does have a lot of bugs and you (as well as other people) have made a strong case that the game shouldn't have been released in its current conditon.
Sure, there were quite a number of things that Funcom did say we were going to get but they may have underestimated the number of people who would be playing the game (as well as the speed some players can go through the game's content).
So let's just be patient and they'll probably get things in order.
Hey, if it makes you feel any better, in the end, we're going to be the guys in the tavern sharing some mead and talking about the "bad old days" of AoC and how we had to foot it (literally) all the way from the Borderlands of Aquilonia to Cimmeria's Lacheish Plains.
