One-on-One with Stargate's David "Zeb" Cook |
Ó
Our solar system has experienced some major changes recently, and there couldn't be a better time to develop am extensive science fiction media franchise like Stargate into a game, aptly titled Stargate Worlds. Well, maybe that wasn't exactly what Lead Systems Designer David “Zeb” Cook and the Cheyenne Mountain team had in mind, but if the shoe fits right?
The original Stargate film that starred Kurt Russell as Col. Jonathan "Jack" O'Neil, out to save the world from alien invasion and mass destruction, has spawned the longest running Sci-Fi series in history; Stargate SG-1 that starred Richard Dean Anderson of MacGyver fame, Stargate Atlantis and a cartoon series called Stargate Infinity.
Here's an excerpt of the interview with Cook.
Q: Stargate SG-1 is now the longest running Sci-Fi television series in history – it has more than ten seasons plus a successful spin-off series. There’s no question you have a lot of universe to build a game around, but what material have you decided to include and exclude thus far into the development process?
David “Zeb” Cook: Since we are still quite early in the process, there are a lot of unknowns, so getting specific is pretty tough to do. Most of our effort right now is in hammering down just what will make sure the game is Stargate SG-1 – how can we capture the tone of the writing, tell stories that feel right for the world, and give players roles that are Stargate-ish. That’s far more important at this stage – the answers to those questions will guide us to the content from the series that best makes the game.
So, at this point, nothing is absolutely excluded – although some material is far more likely than others. We have a not-so short list of things that MUST be in the game. (Most of this is horribly obvious – Stargates, humans, Jaffa, etc.) After that comes the list of things we really WANT and plan to include. THEN, beyond that is the list of things that would be nice but is not something we see as crucial.
