iPhone FAQ: Can you speed up WebApps

It has been reported by several users that launching the web app from an icon on the springboard on the iPhone now takes up two times the amount of time it takes to load it directly from Mobile Safari. Why is this so? The main reason behind this is that web apps/favorite sites which are launched from a shortcut icon are not allowed to use the Nitro Javascript engine that Apple has included in iOS 4.3. Why would Apple do so? If Apple has done this intentionally then this could just be a strategy by Apple to make sure users download more apps from the App store.

So if you have noticed a considerable lag in the performance of your favorite web app then I am sure you would be wondering about the solution for this. Unfortunately, there is no solution for this problem. Hence, iPhoneuserguide.com provides you with a pseudo-solution for this issue with Web apps and iOS 4.3. Opening these web apps on the Safari browser will help bypass any limitations imposed by Apple on these shortcut icons of these websites. It has also been pointed out by LifeHacker that keeping Safari open and then launching these web apps can help load the websites quicker and also help store data offline more efficiently. So for the time being before any solution can be found you can make a new bookmark folder on Safari with the links of all your favorite web apps. If you open the website directly from safari then you won’t have any performance issues. Do however note that if you have not been observing any performance lags with web apps on iOS 4.3 then do not do or change anything. Not all users have reported this problem. If you are not sure what we are on about then just try opening a web app directly from the home screen and then directly from Safari and checking which one opens faster. If there is a difference in web page opening times then you too have the problem. It is doubtful that Apple has put limitations on web apps on purpose and we definitely hope that in a future iOS 4.3 update this performance issue will be fixed.
