iPhone - Image 1Ever wondered why there aren't any background-changing apps on the AppStore? As it turns out, Apple has once said that there won't be any such apps for the iPhone. But according to this new rumor, Apple may be changing its mind about it.

According to publications Business Insider, Daring Fireball, and Telecrunch, Apple is currently working on a way to run apps in the background. Adding to the rumor is the fact that Apple requires such apps to undergo a more thorough application process for the iTunes store. As for motivation for the sudden change of heart, Gizmodo reports that the Palm Pre is nipping at the iPhone's heels with its faster hardware and multitasking capabilities.

Whether this would be part of the OS 3.0's new features, or the rumored 32GB iPhone, still remains to be seen. We might get something when WWDC 2009 comes around.

If you have a jailbroken iPhone you can get the app Backgrounder in cydia, which allows you to run apps in the background. So i wont be holding my breathe for such a feature.
