We spent a load of time playing the with the new iPhone 3.0 final release today, and most importantly, AIM which now supports Apple's Push Notification Service.

AIM's IM app is the only app that supports Push Notifications until launch date, so we decided we'd try it out with the new iPhone 3GS. After initially setting up AIM, logging on and then quitting, we were very surprised to see how well it actually worked, not just over Wi-Fi, but more importantly over 3G. The message notifications came within 5 to 10 seconds of the message being sent from a desktop Mac.

The basis of Push Notifications is that you 'stay logged in' to apps even after you've quit. This opens up a whole new field with apps like Skype, Facebook, AIM, IM+, Beejive etc. All your messages from apps like these can (if you choose) come through to your phone as they are sent, just like a text message.

Battery life was amazingly very good, we expected the constant connection to Apple's servers to really drain the battery, but surpisingly, there was no noticeable change in battery consumption.

Push Notifications is completely going to change the way we all use our iPhones... for the better. Be sure to update your iPhone on June 16th.
