Analyst - Charlie Wolf - iPhone could hit 99 - Image 1According to analyst Charlie Wolf of Needham Research, Apple has a wide margin to lower the price of the iPhone. In fact, if they lower the price of the 8 GB iPhone to US$ 99, they'd wipe out the competition.

Hear that, Apple? Wipe out the competition! I want me a cheap iPhone!

Wolf predicts that a US$ 100 cut in the iPhone 3G's advertised price could double, maybe even triple projected sales, leaving other smartphones eating its dust. Save maybe "niche" smartphones, like the BlackBerry.

Considering that production costs for the iPhone 3G costs US$ 174.33, I doubt the price cut will happen anytime soon, unless Apple really just wants to stick a poker up its competition's collective... ports. Although, Wolf does say that heavy subsidies from AT&T will still allow for a price cut.

» So yeah....

So I'll still have to get a two year contract?

I wished the iTouch was only $99 instead.

I don't want the phone or two year contract!

» no...

with iphone apple gets profits from at+T, but with ipod Touch primary profits are from hardware sales...so 8gb ipod touch will never go below $200.

1. The iPhone isn't really what you would call a "smartphone". Blackberry, Symbian, or Windows CE phones are "smartphones". The iPhone is just a phone with a touch screen, nothing more.

2. Blackberrys are _not_ "niche". They are the most popular (real) smartphone on the market. They cater to businesses that give out phones to employees, yes, however that does not mean that there are not a lot of them out there used by non-enterprise people. (I can think of 3 Blackberrys within my immediate circle of acquaintances, out of 8 people.

3. The iPhone sucks. The Blackberry storm is better.
