T-Mobile iPhone in the Works?

For months now, T-Mobile had been ragging on the iPhone, and by association, its carriers, in a series of snarky commercials. Those may get pulled in the future, since there’s evidence that Apple is developing an iPhone prototype that will work on T-Mobile’s 3G service. BGR has revealed photos of a prototype iPhone that works with T-Mobile’s 3G bands and runs with a test version of Apple’s iOS. The internal model is N94, while the Verizon model is N92 and the AT&T GSM version is N90. Since T-Mobile’s network utilizes different frequencies than those of AT&T, it will need different hardware. Does this mean that AT&T intends to operate T-Mobile as a separate entity, at least for a while? If the larger carrier had plans to just suck up its acquisition and make it disappear, then why the need for a third model of the iPhone?

A special iPhone just for those T-Mobile subscribers who’ve been longing for one could be a potent lure, especially if AT&T sweetens the deal with some special deals for those who sign on for new two-year contracts with the merged conglomerate. Maybe it’s time for T-Mobile to start working on some new TV commercials. Maybe there’s a significant number of T-Mobile subscribers who have been lusting after an iPhone of their own who would be happy to stay with AT&T/T-Mobile of this was possible. If AT&T expects to launch the nation’s most humongous carrier of mobile devices, it needs to hold on to the T-Mobile customers it acquires in the acquisition rather than letting them flee to Verizon as soon as their contracts expire.
