A recent study suggests that social games are pulling in more core gamers that dedicated platforms are.

"This research goes further in segmenting and identifying the gameplay habits of hardcore and casual social gamers than any previous study. While casual social gamers skew female and older, hardcore social gamers skew male and younger, in line with typical core gamer demos. Based on these survey results, hardcore social games are increasingly stealing play time from core games," said Carll Frye, director at Information Solutions Group.

Study info:

  • Social games are gradually attracting more hardcore gamers over from traditional game platforms
  • 82 percent of "hardcore social gamers" (someone who has played a "core" genre on a social network) also play console game
  • Social game playing is "disrupting" their traditional gaming habits
  • 41 percent of U.S. internet users have played social games
  • Hardcore social players will stick with a game for longer periods of time than more casual social gamers
  • 68 percent of hardcore social players play for three hours or more each day
  • 43 percent of casual social gamers play for three hours or more each day
  • Hardcore social gamers noted that they were playing on their games consoles less
  • Average 50 percent decline in spending on console titles
  • 27 percent of social gamers who played games on other platforms said they're spending less time playing games on those other platforms

This study isn't too shocking to me considering just how expensive games are on consoles and dedicated handhelds. Do you prefer cheap social games over deeper and more expensive titles?

I fear that the over saturation of low quality cheap games may be the doom of the industry.

Really? Based on what? For the past year+ I've been playing games on my iPad that BLOW AWAY all gaming from the 80's, 90's and at least half the first decade of 2000.

They are easy to find. It doesn't matter how many crap titles are out there when you search by company. Buy from trusted devs. You can't go wrong. Well, unless of course that dev fails you but whatever....

The industry has remained strong always with the exception of one early crash. Game quality remains high and there has ALWAYS been crap games out there mostly starting with shareware.

i would rather have a deeper more expensive title (though some console games are expensive and shallow :-* )

I'm sure there are some really good games on the Ipad, but ones that blow away 25 years of gaming? Say what? Better than Chrono Trigger, better than FFX, Suikoden 2, Final Fantasy VI, Shadow of the Collosus? Sounds like border line trolling. Please list a few before I laugh.

I'm not gonna lie, as a core gamer I didn't like to play casual, but when you are on the go and got like 5-10 mins, you wanna play games. Games like Sudoku, solitaire, angry birds, Word with Friends and stuff like that. But I only get the free versions, I still don't think they are "worth" my money yet. So I wouldn't say that Social gaming is so much "pulling" me away from core games, but it has given me more options I guess you can say.
