Steve Jobs Livid Over Failure of MobileMe

It’s pretty well known that Apple CEO Steve Jobs is a perfectionist who demands the same from his workers. He’s also notorious for his nasty temper. Both are displayed in Forbes magazine’s new cover story about Jobs’ managerial style. One example mentioned in the article involves the ill-fated 2008 launch of MobileMe, a cloud-based storage service that did not go over well with buyers due to buggy performance. It didn’t help that Walt Mosberg of the Wall Street Journal wrote that MobileMe was “far too flawed to be reliable.” Jobs was incensed over seeing an Apple product fail, and took his anger out on the management team responsible for MobileMe. The CEO excoriated the team for producing a product that was “tarnishing Apple’s reputation.” According to Forbes, he added, “You should hate each other for having let each other down.” So much for team building, coach. The MobileMe team tried to explain to their boss exactly what the service was supposed to do for the user, which doesn’t seem like the smartest thing to do in a situation like this, since he obviously knew already. The explanation didn’t go over too well, since Jobs shot back, “So why the f*** doesn’t it do that?” Jobs then dismissed the project leaders and put a new team on the MobileMe project.

This sounds like an episode of that “Celebrity Apprentice” TV show where Donald Trump sends failed team leaders packing every week. Hopefully, those new team leaders working on the revamped MobileMe rumored to be coming later this year will have better luck, and not have to face the wrath of Steve Jobs. The entire article is available from the Fortune iPad app for $4.95.
