Skype Video Calling Ready for iPhone 4?

Skype has big plans for the 2011 Consumer Electronics Convention, and it’s starting to look like one of them will be video calling for the iPhone. The VoIP service has been leaking info that they’re planning to make a “series of video-related announcements” at CES and will be taking part in a panel called “Video Calling Gets Ready for Primetime.” While Skype debuted its iPhone app back in 2009, it has yet to offer video calling for mobile platforms. However, a document appeared a couple of days ago on Skype’s site giving instructions on how to place video calls using Skype for iPhone. The doc was pulled soon after, but contained the details users would need to make video calls using the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

The models capable of using Skype for video calls include iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, 3rd generation iPod touch, 4th generation iPod touch and iPad. While video calls may be placed from a device not equipped with a camera, your contacts won’t be able to see you. Devices must be running at least iOS 4.0 and Skype 3.0. Since the current version of Skype for iPhone is 2.1.2, it seems same to presume that an upgrade will become available when video calling is formally announced. This is certainly big news for users who prefer using Skype for cheaper long distance international calls.
