Shenmue City social gaming experiment shuts down |

The incredibly detailed and immersive game Shenmue and it's sequel put you in the shoes of a young man who went around looking at stuff, picking fights and having random quick time events with people. It lived on in rumours for several years and eventually last year became Shenmue Town, a free-to-play mobile social game created by Sunsoft and Ys Net. The game was released on the Japan-only Yahoo! Mobage.
The game was a spin-off from the original and was sadly terminated as have the chances for any future entries in the cult series. This would include any development of Shenmue III and Shenmue Online. The original creator, Yu Suzuki served as a producer and director of the social game and Sega provided supervision over Sunsoft. Suzuki has described the Shenmue storyline as "incomplete" and that there was more to the saga than just Shenmue and hoped to explore that in Shenmue Town.
Suzuki said that while he couldn't make any promises "if Shenmue Town is loved by users, and if service for the game continues, I believe we'll be able to deliver those thorough version ups and so forth." The Ys Net site posted a brief thank you and did not cite any reasons for the game being cancelled.
"The feeling of incompleteness is something that I feel strongest. If I have a chance to do it, I'd like to realize this for fans, regardless of what form it takes. If service continues, I believe we'll be able to share [the rest of the story] at some point in some form," Suzuki has said about his game. I've wondered why he hasn't just written an epilogue or gotten someone to make a tiny version for it. With technology nowadays I'm sure he could release the game on the DS store or Wii Ware and thousands of people would give it ago.
