Grey Area announced today the release of Shadow Cities on the App Store, an augmented reality based fantasy game.

"We could not be more excited to deliver our first app, Shadow Cities, to the massively connected generation of iPhone and iPod touch users in North America and literally, turn their cities into a game," said Ville Vesterinen, CEO of Grey Area. "From character leveling, customization, missions and stylized augmented reality to weekly live events, we have worked very hard to create a truly immersive gaming experience. In Shadow Cities, you are the mage and it is your neighborhood you must defend!"

As players move around in the real world, their position in the parallel world of Shadow Cities will also move, revealing both new friendly and enemy players, spirits, traps, neighborhoods as well as many other things for players to interact with. To create a truly global gameplay experience, portals can be opened in cities anywhere that allow friends and allies to move between locations and take part in full-scale virtual battles. The Shadow Cities App builds upon traditional role playing systems and concepts, offering a deep leveling system that allows players to customize their character by learning spells and developing attributes. Players will have the option of instantly replenishing their power after engaging in combat by purchasing potions to refill their mana.

Shadow Cities joins the large list of apps available on Apple's App Store, a service that has broken several Guiness World Records.
