Sen. John McCain Thinks iPhones are Made in America

There are many reasons to admire Sen. John McCain, including his military record and long years of service in the U.S. Senate, but sometimes he says things that make him sound like your creaky old neighbor who’s always yelling at the neighborhood kids to get off his lawn. This weekend was one of those times, when ABC’s “This Week” focused on the appalling decline of manufacturing in American, with the accompanying loss of jobs and blight in once-healthy industrial communities. Host Christiane Amanpour pointed out, “In 1960, foreign goods made up just 8 percent of Americans’ purchases. Today, nearly 60 percent of everything we buy is made overseas.” After claiming that if all foreign-made products were removed from the average household, there wouldn’t be much left, she then brought out Sen. McCain to comment, and he didn’t do too well. After a promising start where he agreed with President Obama that “innovation is the key to us being able to restore our economy,” McCain stated, “I would also point out that if you’d emptied that house there, if you’d left a computer there or an iPad or an iPhone, those are built in the United States of America.” Uh, not so fast, Senator. The white box containing any Apple product you buy contains the words “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China.” To be more specific, Taiwanese-based electronic manufacturing company Foxconn produces most Apple products, while other companies in Taiwan do the rest.

In the hands of a spokesman with more knowledge of technology, this could have been an interesting discussion of why the majority of tech-related products are produced overseas due to costs, and what we can do to bring some of that manufacturing business back here, where we so badly need it. But that would force the current crop of pols to get serious about the subject of jobs, and they don’t seem to want to do that right now.
