No AirPlay or Game Center for iPhone 3G

The long-awaited iOS 4.2 finally made it out of the gate today, bringing lots of spiffy features like multitasking and folders for the iPad, plus AirPrint and iTunes TV show rentals for all Apple mobile devices. Unfortunately, two of the most wanted features will not work on older models of the iPhone and iPod Touch. AirPlay, which allows wireless streaming of video, photos and music from Apple mobile devices to Apple TV and enabled speakers, and social gaming feature Game Center will not operate on the iPhone 3G and first-generation iPod Touch. Both AirPlay and Game Center are available on iPad, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch (2nd generation and later). Apple blames the exclusion on “performance issues,” but this is likely to give iPhone 3G owners one more reason to suspect that Apple makes their older devices obsolete after a year or two so you’ll have to buy the newer version. Of course, hackers are certain to be busy right now, figuring out how to get around this problem.
