New iPhone App Awards You for Watching TV

The new app is called Viggle and yes it does reward you for watching TV shows on your iPhone. Here's how it works:

Viggle detects what you're watching on your iPhone, whether it's live or recorded, and gives you two points per minute. These points can be saved up to earn various rewards from iTunes, CVS, Best Buy, Starbucks, Burger King, etc. 7500 points gets you a $5 gift certificate.

While this alone seems like you'd have to watch a whole lot of TV to get a measly five bucks, this is just the baseline. Viggle is offering additional points for watching certain shows and ads. For example, in the beta version of Viggle you got 100 points for watching a 15-second Verizon Wireless ad. You also get 1500 points just for signing up.

The catch for all this is that you have to watch at least 10 minutes of a show to earn the rewards and you can only watch an ad once to earn points. Repeated viewings do you no good, so you have to watch other ads to earn points.

They're also apparently looking to get Viggle on Android and PC.

Is this the future of TV? For me, there is nothing that will get me to subject myself to more ads. We're all bombarded by them constantly and I couldn't imagine my psyche taking on more. If something like this makes it to TV sets then I guess I'll have no choice.

What do you guys think?

But how does it know you are actually watching? There's a big difference between watching and your phone simply playing video.

Seems too easy to cheat.

The App probably just sends info from the App linked to your IMEI to their server every time you watch something so they always know how much you watching the same way a lot of other Apps work.

Then that would be a piece of cake to cheat.

How? If you do cheat and try to make them think you just watched 90 minutes worth of videos in the space of 2 minutes their server will probably flag it and you'll get banned or something.

Maybe if you own an ipod touch, you could set it to start a movie, and leave it in ur house when you go to school (since you need to take ur phone with to everywhere)

Fun Fact: An iphone, being charged once a day for 2 years, uses up only $1.80 of electricity.

Who said anything about hacking the data?

AssassinXCV pretty much summed it up.

I could be at work, start a video on my phone and put it under my desk. An hour later, start something else...something else...something else....

Get the idea?
