Is Apple's Cloud Ready to Launch?

According to numerous sources, Apple’s cloud-based locker service for digital music will be launching very soon, and may have a major advantage over the one previously released by Amazon. While Amazon debuted its service last month without inking any pacts with the major labels. All Things D is reporting that Apple already has deals in place with two of the four and an Apple executive is in NYC today to lock in the details with the others. One music exec who preferred to remain anonymous stated that Apple had been “very aggressive and thoughtful about it” and “It feels like they want to go pretty soon.” Industry execs have revealed that Apple plans to bypass the objections that have hit Amazon by storing a single master copy of a song, then allowing users to listen to them on multiple devices. If Apple can strike the right deals, it could sidestep the need to upload individual copies by letting users stream off of the single master copy, which could result in less upload time for the user and storage space for Apple.

Amazon, Apple and Google are all vying for the brand new market of cloud-based storage services. Amazon’s head start could turn out to be a curse if the music labels band together in an effort to shut their service down because of their failure to play ball with the music industry. Google is dragging behind and may not be able to catch up. Apple has been building its “server farm” in North Carolina for over a year and obviously has planned its own launch very carefully. Given Apple’s years of experience in digital music with iTunes, it has to have the upper hand in this race.
