University of Florida iPhone - Image 1The  next time somebody scoffs at your iPhone or iPod Touch and saying that it's just another fad, you might want to point them to the University of Florida. As of this incoming Fall 2009, they are requiring Pharmacy students to have their own units. And no, this is not a joke.

The University of Florida becomes the second school in months to announce this new requirement for their students. According to a directive from the College of Pharmacy:

Important notice!

As of 6/26/09 all incoming fall 2009 PharmD students are required to have an iPod touch. An iPhone will also meet this requirement. Incoming fall 2009 students are not required to purchase clickers. These students will use the iPod Touch with special software instead of 'clicker' devices. Details are posted in the Computer & Technology Orientation Site.

What's in these Apple gadgets that make it reliable as a supplementary educational tool for our future pharmacists?

"These are the instruments at the forefront that are developing applications for medical use by the hundreds," explained Dean William Riffee. "We want our students to become adept at using these mobile devices early on because we see this as the future in pharmacy practice."

The University of Missouri preceded UF by a good three months in setting the same requirement, this time for their journalism students.

» Interesting

I wonder if apple made some kind of deal with the university and to top it off the university makes you buy one instead of supplying it...?

But really?

You see these articles and outsiders think, "Yay technology! These guys are on the cutting edge!"

But no, 9 times out of 10 they require these technologies and never utilize them. Or they do, for one class. It's all a publicity ploy. It makes the school look cutting edge and Apple has a field day all at the cost to the students. (also, it gets in all the papers)

Sometimes the schools will even provide this stuff free! Free, right out of the tuition and from increased attendance due to well, basically advertising.
