Has the iPhone Killed the iPod?

When the iPod came out in 2001, it totally changed the way we buy and listen to music. Instead of shelves full of CDs taking up space, you could carry your entire record collection around in your pocket. Instead of going to the local record or discount store and hoping they have the CD you want, you just go to iTunes and download it immediately. Then the iPhone came out in 2007, and let you carry your music and your phone in the same package. Purchases of iPods began to drop, and the latest quarterly numbers showed the lowest sales since 2006. So when Steve Jobs shows off the latest from Apple on Wednesday, the event is likely to be a disappointment if all we get is new iPods. Unless the new iPods are drastically different from the old ones, and offer features that make users feel they have to rush right out and get one, the interest just won’t be there. The press will be attending this event hoping for a Verizon iPhone or a 7” iPad, not the 2010 iPod they’re likely to get.
