Grand Theft Auto III Coming to Your iPhone |
Listed in: News Tags: android, grand theft auto iii, ipad, iphone, Rockstar
It’s hard to imagine, but Grand Theft Auto III, the game generally recognized as revolutionizing what game developers could do with an open world, has been out for 10 years. For a bit of perspective, the number one song in 2001 was Independent Women Part 1, by Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé was still a person in a band when GTAIII hit shelves.
Anyway, this post isn’t about Beyoncé. It’s about Rockstar’s most recent announcement – in celebration of the tenth anniversary of GTAIII, they’re releasing the game not to consoles or direct download, but directly to mobile platforms.

Here’s the currently supported device lineup, courtesy of the Rockstar blog:
Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.
Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.
I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.
Anyone planning on downloading GTAIII to their mobile device, or are you sticking to consoles?

touchscreen games work fine for angry birds, or other simple games. it gets annoying when they have to port games to the phone/tablet with no real controller to operate them.

Who told you the game could only be made a certain way. You want 4-5 buttons, stay on your console. This is for everyone else.

1. You do not know anything about the game.
2. You do not know what direction they plan to take it.
Yet, you know it's inferior. The internet is a magical place!!!

Might they redesign the game to accomodate the touchscreen control? probably, but it would be a dumbing-down of the game/controls.
and since "the internet is a magical place", i declare muself the winner, no backs infinity!

Wrong, but thanks for playing. That is NOT the direction I was referring to.
"there is no possible way that the mobile touchscreen can replicate the controls necessary to play the game like it was originally designed. "
I see you commented on a previous post without even reading it. Here it is again:
"Who told you the game could only be made a certain way."
That goes along with:
"1. You do not know anything about the game."
As well as:
"2. You do not know what direction they plan to take it."
Here's an idea. How about you wait until they actually make the game. See what the game is all about THEN form an opinion as to whether or not the game is good/bad.

yeah, looks soooooooo fucking fantastic. AND easy to control! i'm going to rush out right now and buy every single mobile device that this will be available on, just so i can play it on every device.

Virtual joystick looks like they did a good job.
Buttons on the right pop up as needed which is actually a good idea.
It doesn't help that the moron playing is only using one finger. All in all it looks pretty good to me. Plus there are already dual analog games on iOS and they work good as well.
So...what's the problem? ;p

"now they think that having no tactile sense of buttons and controls is just as good as a controller"
Do you have a quote and a link to where you got that statement?
"shit, most people cant type more than 3 words slowly on a touchscreen without having to correct at least one of the words"
Morons don't count and I wouldn't say "most".

-my words. if you cant plug a controller into an ipad or a phone, they you have to make do with their touchscreen buttons.

So to wrap this up YOU don't like touch controls. So what does your opinion have to do with:
"leave these games on systems with a real set of controls."
THEY HAVE the games with physical controllers. Did you not buy any? Did you not get to play them? No one said they are going to quit making console games in favor of touch.
THey are making both so you already got your wish. In fact, you wasted a wish as they never stopped
