Grand Theft Auto III Coming to Your iPhone

It’s hard to imagine, but Grand Theft Auto III, the game generally recognized as revolutionizing what game developers could do with an open world, has been out for 10 years. For a bit of perspective, the number one song in 2001 was Independent Women Part 1, by Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé was still a person in a band when GTAIII hit shelves.

Anyway, this post isn’t about Beyoncé. It’s about Rockstar’s most recent announcement – in celebration of the tenth anniversary of GTAIII, they’re releasing the game not to consoles or direct download, but directly to mobile platforms.

Here’s the currently supported device lineup, courtesy of the Rockstar blog:

Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.

Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see  GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.

I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.

Anyone planning on downloading GTAIII to their mobile device, or are you sticking to consoles?

that at least had normal controls. are we going to have to quickly tap the screen to shoot? what about driving and shooting out the windows? fuck this - leave these games on systems with a real set of controls.

fine - you tell me how a touchscreen interface is supposed to replicate using 4 or 5 different buttons at the same time. think about a driving mission - you need to steer (at the very minimum, 4 buttons in various combinations to mimic 360 degree movement), gas, brake, emergency brake, and shooting out 2 sides of the car, plus the ability to get out of the car. you're telling me that a touchscreen is going to make that fun to control? don't forget the ability to pan the camera to get a better view as well.

touchscreen games work fine for angry birds, or other simple games. it gets annoying when they have to port games to the phone/tablet with no real controller to operate them.

"you tell me how a touchscreen interface is supposed to replicate using 4 or 5 different buttons at the same time"

Who told you the game could only be made a certain way. You want 4-5 buttons, stay on your console. This is for everyone else.

yep, go ahead and play an inferior version of the game. be my guest. just because they can bring a game to a mobile platform doesn't mean they have to , or should.

Interesting:

1. You do not know anything about the game.

2. You do not know what direction they plan to take it.

Yet, you know it's inferior. The internet is a magical place!!!

au contraire, i DO know what direction they plan to take it - the mobile device (read: touchscreen) market. there is no possible way that the mobile touchscreen can replicate the controls necessary to play the game like it was originally designed.
Might they redesign the game to accomodate the touchscreen control? probably, but it would be a dumbing-down of the game/controls.
and since "the internet is a magical place", i declare muself the winner, no backs infinity!

"i DO know what direction they plan to take it - the mobile device (read: touchscreen) market."

Wrong, but thanks for playing. That is NOT the direction I was referring to.

"there is no possible way that the mobile touchscreen can replicate the controls necessary to play the game like it was originally designed. "

I see you commented on a previous post without even reading it. Here it is again:

"Who told you the game could only be made a certain way."

That goes along with:

"1. You do not know anything about the game."

As well as:

"2. You do not know what direction they plan to take it."

Here's an idea. How about you wait until they actually make the game. See what the game is all about THEN form an opinion as to whether or not the game is good/bad.

Now here's something to at least go by.

Virtual joystick looks like they did a good job.

Buttons on the right pop up as needed which is actually a good idea.

It doesn't help that the moron playing is only using one finger. All in all it looks pretty good to me. Plus there are already dual analog games on iOS and they work good as well.

So...what's the problem? ;p

yeah, buttons that pop up when you need them and a circle for a joystick will work reeeeeal well until you are in the heat of the game, then your finger(s) slide to where there isn;t an actual button and you are pressing either the wrong buttonspot or not hitting anything at all. shit, most people cant type more than 3 words slowly on a touchscreen without having to correct at least one of the words, now they think that having no tactile sense of buttons and controls is just as good as a controller. like i said, dumbed down interface.

I've been in the "heat of a game" with a virtual joystick. It's not a problem.

"now they think that having no tactile sense of buttons and controls is just as good as a controller"

Do you have a quote and a link to where you got that statement?

"shit, most people cant type more than 3 words slowly on a touchscreen without having to correct at least one of the words"

Morons don't count and I wouldn't say "most".

-my words. if you cant plug a controller into an ipad or a phone, they you have to make do with their touchscreen buttons.

Then your words are false. You are telling us what THEY THINK. You don't know what they think.

So to wrap this up YOU don't like touch controls. So what does your opinion have to do with:

"leave these games on systems with a real set of controls."

THEY HAVE the games with physical controllers. Did you not buy any? Did you not get to play them? No one said they are going to quit making console games in favor of touch.

THey are making both so you already got your wish. In fact, you wasted a wish as they never stopped :P

If this is a problem, jailbreak the older model phone. It'll lag on the 3GS and lower, and the 4 might have issues since it has the same GPU as the 3GS, combined with 4 times the pixels to process.

yawn yeah who knows until the game comes out i see this on every single story about a port of a game not designed for use on a mobile/tablet device, and every time it ends the same way people rush and buy the game and then ask devs to fix the fact that the games entire mechanics are not designed for touchscreen use, yeah everyone will always sit there and be hoping that its going to be a revolutionary new control scheme and yeah its never completely unplayable, but it needs a lot of time and effort to master the controls to a degree where the whole game is playable, which is somthing most people using touch screens cant be bothered doing, why spend 2 months to learn off by heart exactly where every button is then the next game all the buttons are diffrent, thats the diffrence between consoles and touchscreen devices if once you are used to a controller, every game released are pretty much simple to pick up where as on a touch screen only device its a learning curve for every game realease

anyone else notice the xperia-play's not on the list? Wondering if this is a silent jab at sony-ericson or just a typo...

The reason why it's not there is because the Xperia play is weak.

It's weak compared to most other android phones.
