Google Shows Some Love for the iPhone

While some rivals have embarrassed themselves with silly quotes about how their new product was going to kick Apple’s ass, one pragmatic executive has shown his savvy about how the two can coexist. Google’s Asia-Pacific president Daniel Alegre made this intriguing statement to AdNews: “Whenever iPhone succeeds, Google succeeds.” Alegre continued, “I actually don’t look at it as iPhone versus Android. iPhone is a very strong driver of query growth for Google. We also monetise apps through the iPhone..we actually benefit from iPhone’s growth.” What that means basically is that Google gets to rake in big bucks from the iPhone owners who use its search engine. Unlike some other tech companies that can’t come anywhere near competing with Apple, Android is racking up 300,000 activations a day, which is a big reason why Alegre can afford to be magnanimous. He also explained how the mobile industry benefits from having as few platforms as possible, which makes sense for developers, whose lives would be much easier if all they had to deal with was Android and iOS. In November 2009, Google paid $750 million for mobile ad company AdMob, outbidding Apple. This move made Google the most powerful player in mobile advertising, since AdMob is the most popular platform for ads in mobile-optimized websites and within smartphone apps for both Android and iPhone.

Google recently released quarterly results showing that its revenue for the March quarter totaled over $8.58 million, and $1.31 billion of that went to commissions and fees for its ad network and partners. While Google has not revealed how much of that revenue it owes to the iPhone, it has to be a sizeable chunk. So while Apple and Android may seem to be battling it out, in reality they have a symbiotic relationship that works for both of them.
