Dyack: "Fart apps" are hurting the industry

Silicon Knights boss Denis Dyack seems to agree with Nintendo president Satoru Iwata's recent notion about the booming App industry, cheap apps are "eroding the handheld market" and the over supply are "affecting the industry in a very negative way".

denis-dyack1

"As an example, my understanding is that there are 17,000 fart apps right now. Those are more fart apps than anyone could possibly ever consume. What that does... when you start having performance oversupply, it accelerates the commoditization that drives the value of games down," said Dyack in an interview with IndustryGamers. "EEDAR did a talk at a conference where they said the gross average for an iOS game - gross, not net - was $700. I can guarantee you that a company like ours and most people cannot survive on a $700 gross. So what’s happening is you have a lot of people going into this hoping that they’re going to get this smash hit like Angry Birds and you have a lot of investment in this industry and it’s not clear if that’s a viable industry."

"Looking at that number, it’s frightening, but what it seems to be doing is eroding the handheld market where you’re actually getting really high quality games instead of fart apps. And I’m not saying there aren’t quality games on the iOS, because there are; there are some good games there, but there’s so much performance oversupply and so much commoditization, that it actually is affecting, in my opinion, the industry in a very negative way. And from the perspective of what Iwata-san is saying and what Reggie [Fils-Aime] is saying, I do agree that the industry has to be really careful with that - you’re seeing such a dramatic disruption."

I'm so glad this topic showed it's head again in a similar manner. I remember when the "Garage Developers" comment was first made by Fils-Aime....or was it Iwata? Anyway, I remember so many people being offended by that comment while I was the only one that fully agreed with it.

Why did I agree? Because of shit like this. 17,000 fart apps? + the 100,000's more other POINTLESS apps. (not including useful ones...)

Look...."Garage Developers", stay out of our way, this industry is for the big dogs, get me? Not everyone who's a techy can produce the next hit on their gaming PCs in which their mommys paid for. A great game isn't half-assed made, half tested, half coded, half working. I'm sick of hearing at work from these tech noobs that smartphone/device apps will lead the industry. Sorry, but that isn't going to happen.....Nintendo will lead this industry

The only they hurt is the browsing of the app stores. Most people ignore them.

Fucking moron. The only thing these "fart apps" are doing is showing that you don't need to charge $60 a fucking game to get some entertainment. The expectations of gaming quality isn't going down, the desire to pay the amount demanded by publishers is going down! The industry isn't suffering, the profits of big business are suffering. Make a game last more than 8 hours, we might be willing to buy more! Every Zelda game I've ever played lasted more than 30 hours. Even if it was a marathon of Ocarina of Time, it lasted longer than the campaign modes of practically all RPGs out there today.

So true. I agree with the erosion of the handheld market that Dyack is talking about but I also agree with your point. People would rather pay .99 for a crap-game they'll REplay for a total of 8 hours (throughout their entire life) than pay 60-90 bucks for a game they'll play through ONCE for only 8 hours (then trade it in for less than half it's value).

If devs are going to charge 60-90 bucks for a game then it needs to be worth it.

The fact of the matter is that these fart apps have proven that 8 hours of gameplay (even if it is just replay) and mediocre quality/presentation/content is only worth .99 to consumers.

That's not to say we need 480 hours of gameplay per se, but cut the difference and cover it with higher quality gameplay that we'll want to replay for 480+ hours.

The industry needs to die so game developers can go back to being in studios.

yes, there' s 17000 fart apps, but he fails to take into account all the shitty games for all the consoles that end up in the $10 bin after 2 months

I think the 3DS could use a good fart app. It would be a nice addition to the launch lineup and could sell for $40.

I honestly don't think apps are killing the industry, apps seem to be for casual gamers like moms or others who just don't really get into the gaming scene. These people wouldn't buy a console game anyways cause most likely they don't own one, they aren't the target audience.

on a side note love how this is coming from a company that had a game in development for over a decade just to fail, maybe thats where all your revenue went...

So much whining because they don't make the same amount of money they used to. Make a better game then people will buy it, end of story. People know when they are getting screwed with so that's why people move to "fart apps". Cause its cheap (or free) and it still just as entertaining as the shovelware most of them spew out. Don't hate cause someone else is playing the game better than you, improve yourself.

This guy is right on the money.
Want a good example, look at the original ATARI. Everyone and their dog was making Atari games, and allot were pure shit. They flooded the market with bad games and even Atari themselves put out shit like ET and the 2600 version of Pac Man.
What happened? THE INDUSTRY COLLAPSED and game consoles were DEAD until the NES in 1985 brought it back to life.
That is exactly what is happening with this mobile apps crap, the market is being flooded with crap, sure some of it is good, but allot are SHIT, and it's hurting the industry.

The video game industry is ready for another crash... not because of cheap $1 "apps" on phones, but because the MARKET IS FLOODED WITH $60 CRAP across the board. There are too many crappy games out for the big consoles, so obviously when a $1 "fart app" outsells a $60 FPS clone for 360/PS3 it really says something about how many games are out there and just how many the casual user is willing to spend $60 on. Just look at the economy, coupled with the fact that all current consoles have broken the 5 year console life span we have seen in past generations and the fact that the market is flooded with garbage games (remember what happened to the Atari 2600 when there were too many games?). Face it, the game industry is losing money, not from pirates (they were never gonna buy any of the games they steal) but from the fact that a lot of people are just done with this generation of crap games. I don't plan on buying another game system period (until it is hacked and the games are free), as this 5 year cycle has not improved on the visuals as much as last generations did over the previous ones (Dreamcast came out 12 years ago and the 360 can barely top its graphics), the current hardware can not even hold it together for 5 years (the original Xbox 360 has a +90% hardware failure rate, I've had 7 repairs myself- & don't think the new slim units are immune to this as they still have the X-Clamp designed to hinder the machine down the line)and the market is absolutely flooded with crap. Almost every game out there is a FPS boring bloodfest... these games deserve to be stolen, so you only waste your time and not your time and money. LA Noire is boring, I can't believe they spent 5 years on that crap. I'm having much more fun playing old Genesis games on my hacked PS3 (only bought it for CFW). Hahahaha the 2nd video game crash is happening right now and it's great. Usually we would be ready for another leap forward in visuals as a new console should be emerging, but neither Sony or M$ wants to be first to market as they both know that it is flooded with crap and no one wants to pay $400+ for another system that looks only slightly better than the last generation, will probably break within a year or two and have launch titles that are really unfinished games from the last generation (Perfect Dark Zero would have looked the same on the original Xbox as that is what is was developed for).
