Carmack: Mobile phones will pass consoles

John Carmack, founder of id Software and mind behind upcoming shooter Rage, has predicted that mobile devices will soon eclipse consoles in terms of power.

"It's unquestionable that within a very short time, we're going to have portable cell phones that are more powerful than the current-gen consoles," Carmack said. "2 years from now, there will be mobile devices more powerful than what we're doing all these fabulous games on right now."

"Could the bottom drop out on the triple A market because everyone's playing Angry Birds? It doesn't seem to be happening. The numbers don't show that. We're selling more big titles than ever before, despite having all of these other platforms out there. So it looks like it's parallel growth rather than one stealing from the other. But platform wise, you could certainly imagine a future where, instead of having your console, you have your mobile device and it talks to your TV and when you want the experience on your big screen with the surround sound coming out of there, it's still on the same device," he finished.

HAHAHAHAHA, this guy always talks shit about consoles. He's probably paid under the table to do so. Make's me sick to hear a game developer talking about stuff like that....

As if anything on android or iphone gives the same experience as somehting like halo reach or killzone 3.

The guy doesn't realize how much easier it is to make something look HD on a little 4.3 inch screen compared to a FUCKING 70 INCH PLASMA OR LED OR LCD SCREEN. Cell phones are simply cell phones. Not matter what some fan boy of any cell phone company says, theres no similar experience.

Passing consoles in power? Maybe sure. Not really likely, but maybe linking phones iwth a console kind of like Wii U. Technology is unpredictable.

Passing Consoles in sales? High chance. Fucking Angry birds. Plus the fact that everyone has a cell phone.

Passing Consoles overall? Don't know yet, but they will probably just grow side by side with Phones being more profitable to develop on.

Money talks, developers won't care about the consumers who just want HD games on a television if you aren't will to cough up cash.

Just accept it. Wii U is currently the smartest and most profitable idea right now.

Current consoles? Well derp. Handhelds today are more powerful than some of the CGI rendering stations used back in the 90s; anyone remember the original Time Crisis cover?

At the end of the day though, consoles will always provide more physical room for the powerful components and the cooling systems necessary for superior performance. It doesn't matter how powerful phones get, that very same technology can just be applied inside a gaming console on a much larger scale, and the room for cooling which you just don't get with handhelds means you can pump out considerably higher clock speeds.
