Bug in iOS 6 Causing Data Overages |
Listed in: News, Rumors, Software, iOS, Tips and Tricks Tags: apple, data charges, ios 6
As far as firmware updates go, iOS 6 proved to be something of a public relations nightmare for Apple. While Apple Maps and its many errors were at the very center of debate, what seems to be causing problems these days lies far deeper under the hood than a simple native application. Due to some errors in network activity, podcasts and audio streams are being inadvertently downloaded several times over, leading to huge data overages charges for some.

So how can a bug like this happen? For that you can blame a few key miscalculations when it comes to connectivity. Essentially whenever the internet connection would become interrupted due to location interference or outside influences, all podcast downloads and audio streams would stop. However, when the download was resumed, portions that had already been started were being overwritten several times over with each successive download attempt. In many cases this caused the operation itself to go into a never ending cyclical gathering of data which paved the way for charges that could quadruple your normal bill!
So what can you do to stop this from happening? Right now there are two pretty basic solutions that can at least begin to cover you. For one, if you aren't already, try updating to 6.0.1. Many users claim that this helps, while for some the issue still continues to happen. If that fails for you, disabling any sort of connection to the Podcast app as well as iTunes Match seems to be a pretty solid solution. While it won't account for other third party apps that may use audio streams, these are the two native culprits that are probably on your system. That being said, it appears the iOS 6 woes haven't ended yet.
