Beware the Hand-Me-Down iPhone

Tara Nilsson of Flower Mound, Texas, happened to pick up her 11-year-old son’s iPhone when it vibrated, and the mom got a nasty surprise. “I am not normally snoopy, but luckily that day I picked it up,” Nilsson told KDAF in Dallas-Ft. Worth. “It had a long distance phone number, a web address and it said ‘meet a sex partner tonight.’” Somehow a sex website had gotten her son’s number. As it turned out, the kid’s phone had previously belonged to his father’s company. Several employees had used the phone, and the number hadn’t been changed. Tech-expert Justin Gray gave his tips for safely passing a used iPhone to your child, starting with advising parents to restore it to factory settings. “Different cell phone makers and operating systems have different options to set parental controls…Set a pass code and you can turn off (access) to safari, youtube, itunes.” A little time cleaning the iPhone before giving it to a child can prevent trouble later.
