Apple to Award $10,000 iTunes Gift Card for 10 Billionth App Download

Don’t pay any attention to that number on this page—it’s changing by the second. Apple’s iTunes App Store is rapidly closing in on its 10 billionth download, and offering a sweet prize for Apple addicts. The lucky winner who downloads app #10 billion will score a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. Enter each time you download an app, or see the rules for how to enter without a purchase. Yeah, free apps count. This is certainly a splashy way to remind us how rapidly the App Store and iTunes have grown since 2003, when all iTunes had was, well, tunes. The App Store hit five billion downloads in June, and has sold nearly a billion every month since. It seems like now everybody has an app store, making it hard to remember how pioneering this idea was back in 2008, when the App Store opened as part of iTunes.

This promotion began on January 6, and will be over when someone downloads that 10 billionth app. But that probably hasn’t happened yet, so go on over there and download some apps. Think what kind of damage you could do with $10,000 credit at the App Store!
