Apple removes copycat App Store Games |

Apple has taken it upon themselves to be lords of the App Store manor and has started to take down apps that would essentially be poorly made or free copies of original iPhone titles. The hit sellers such as Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, Temple Run and a few other future classics have had a few imposters sapping up their money and Apple has finally hit back and started to remove them from the App Store.
Titles such as the ever popular, Plant vs. Zombie, Angry Ninja Birds and Temple Jump, all were wiped from the face of Steve Jobs White earth and have probably been sent cease and desist notices. Okay, so not all the copycat apps have been taken down, just the ones from indie developers such as Anton Sinelnikov and David Smith. Mr. Smith said on his Twitter feed this morning that out of the 68 iOS apps he produced, only nine remained this morning.
All of this is coming in the wake of the Zynga and Triple Town allegations of copyright infringing titles or original ideas which have been nabbed up and despite several instances of this occurring both on and offline, this is one of the first times that a platform has taken down it's own products and regulated itself. Temple Run producer and Imangi co-founder Natalia Luckyanova talked with Gamaustra and said "we're really happy with how quickly Apple responded to the situation and removed [Temple Jump]. The app was clearly a scam that traded entirely on the popularity of Temple Run and was packaged to confuse users."
Luckyanova talked about the Temple Jump situation saying how she was initially upset about the way the creators had made it looks like a tie-in with their game and that a lot of people were scammed entirely based on something that could have easily been avoided. I think this all dates back to how Mockbusters work when it came to the DVD store or when your grandparents would buy you a game for Christmas. There would always be one producer or game developer who would make a game/film that would sound a lot like something that was coming out and you'd just end up with a crappy present and a disappointed grandparent...Thank you Apple.
