App Store for Jailbroken iPhones Coming

Owners of jailbroken iPhones will soon have an even larger selection of apps to choose from. According to BGR, the Infiniti Dev Team is getting ready to launch an alternative app store called Lima. Rather than requiring a storefront app like Apple or Cydia, Lima will be entirely browser-based and accessible via Safari. Shoppers can just clink on the store’s URL to check out, download and install new themes and apps. Lima will be more similar to the Amazon Appstore for Android or the Android Market. According to MacStories, Lima will give third parties the opportunity to put their programs up for sale. Author Federico Viticci says buyers will be able to use “a backup system for installed packages” that will eliminate the need for third-party apps like xBackup or PKGBackup to restore their apps following a firmware update. No doubt there will be more “outlaw” app stores rising up as the number of iPhone owners choose to jailbreak their phones. Currently, about ten percent of iOS devices are getting jailbroken and over a million visitors log onto the Cydia Store on a daily basis. The main reason for this activity is likely Apple’s overly restrictive policies on both app approval and use of the iPhone. Apple has long been criticized for its closed system that tells iPhone buyers exactly what they may and may not do with their handsets.

Also frustrating and sometimes hard to understand is Apple’s criteria for acceptance of apps. Steve Jobs seems to be determined to keep the Apple blogosphere squeaky clean and porn-free, to the point of demanding Playboy magazine’s app contain no nudity. How ridiculous is that? The availability of a more varied collection of apps could encourage even more iPhone users to go for the jailbreak.
