iPod touch: Reigning champ of Portable Gaming |

I don't own an iPod Touch (or an iPhone), Apple's amazing bit of everything in your pocket, but it seems that 68 million other people in the world, do. iPod Touch has beat out Nintendo's DS and Sony's PSP as being the most popular portable game player in the world.
It's the mix of portability and a large consumer base, which makes Apple the biggest contender in the portable games race. Apple's Phil Schiller (which may be the best name ever since Nick Rickler) announced yesterday that the iPod Touch is now the world's most popular portable gaming device, according to Apple's statistics, of course.
"Popular" is a strong word, but as Schiller explained, "Not only is it hte most popular music player in the world (no contest, really), but we're excited to announce it's the most popular portable game player", as the 68 million on Gamecentre proves. It's a pretty good statistic considering the people I know who play iPhone games and aren't connected to GameCentre or have a Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch.
Apple also claims that it has paid out over $3 billion US to App Store developer, with 18 billion applications being downloaded and apparently are being downloaded at 1 billion a month. Tim Cook will be happy and Jobs must have been proud as the iPhone now constitutes for 5% of the entire global handset market and the current iPhone 4 is actually half of all the iPhone's ever sold.
Also I promise the next story I write will have nothing to do with Jobs and company.

This assumption is flawed. They are taking the fact that the device has such a large user based coupled with the category it fits in and declaring it rules that category. Could we equally say it's the most popular GPS in the world because of that capability? The most popular movie player? The most popular e-reader? Just because it has a certain feature does not mean every single user that owns one is using it for that feature. I'm sure there's a large portion that only uses them for music. Also, they note the sales of apps, but not all apps are games. Or perhaps they use them for a few games, but not nearly as much as they would on another portable device. I don't see phones becoming serious gaming devices until they begin to include actual gaming controls like the Xperia.

1. Never....EVER...listen to numbers from Apple. They misrepresent the truth every chance they get. Case in point - did you listen to his 6 million OSX Lion upgrade garbage? Gee, a couple weeks and everyone upgraded versus Microsoft who took months? What that jackhole doesn't tell you is that 6 million is versus 120 MILLION!!!
2. 68 million game center? Is that suppose to mean something compared to 150 million DS sales? Also, game center is on the iPhone and iPad as well. So that number means nothing to the iPod Touch only. Also, if you have two different iOS devices you can have two different gamecenter accounts. So that is NOT 68 million different people.
Here's a clue for you, journalism requires INVESTIGATION. Quit being spoon fed information.

4. So everyone you know has gamecenter turned off in settings? Gee, that's a convenient comment.
5. "18 billion applications being downloaded..." does not automatically equal games.

Yes, OBVIOUSLY the iPhone, iPod, etc. are gonna sell a lot more than ANY gaming system because they have a much larger consumer base. Their main purpose isn't gaming; it just lets you download "games" that are very shallow when compared to games on the 3ds and PsVita (mostly)

I know angry birds has reached 'FAD' status, but come on...the iPad Touch is not the most popular portable gaming device on the planet! Probably in the 'apple' universe but not on planet Earth.
