iOS 5 to Bring OTA Updates to iPhone

Apple is about to make it easier for you to receive those frequent iOS updates that fix the glitches from the previous versions. A report from 9to5Mac claims that Apple is negotiating with Verizon to begin delivering iOS updates over the air with the introduction of iOS 5. This over-the-air feature would eliminate the necessity of connecting the iPhone to a computer with iTunes in order to download upgrades by allowing users to update by beaming the latest version of iOS directly to their iPhone via Wi-Fi or 3G. Since some Android devices already have this feature, so why is Apple just adding it now? Because of the high bandwidth requirement for this service, Apple has to negotiate deals with the individual carriers to make this work. This will certainly be a time-saver for iPhone users, since Apple updates its software so frequently these days. A month doesn’t go by without another upgrade that either adds new features or fixes some bug. GIven that Apple is in a battle with Android for the smartphone market, the tech giant can’t let a rival get ahead of them with a feature like this. It seems likely that the iPad and iPod Touch will also be able to receive over-the-air updates. Sources claim that Apple and Verizon have been working together on OTA updates for several months, but there’s no word on whether similar plans are being made with AT&T.

When can we expect OTA upgrades to become available? iOS 5 is due in the fall, and while it will not be available OTA, incremental upgrades will. This feature will surely be welcomed by busy iPhone owners who don’t feel like running back to their computers every time a new upgrade pops up.
