There was a time when Will Wright could do no evil. Developing games like SimCity and The Sims for some reason led to him being seen as some sort of visionary, and many gamers and developers alike considered him one of the best in the business. Until he released Spore, that is, and it all came crashing down. But all problems with Spore aside, when Will Wright announces a new game, it's usually a big deal.
Now Wright is back with another bold idea that takes your social data and incorporates it into your gaming experience. But will it work?
The new game, titled HiveMind, is being developed by Wright’s new studio (of the same name). The concept is certainly interesting: HiveMind uses your phone’s location data to figure out what sorts of things you do, then builds those routines into gameplay. Wright says, “If we can learn enough about the player, we can create games about their real life. How do we get you more engaged in reality rather than distract you from it?”
Basically, the idea of HiveMind is to use your interests and habits to form new real-life experiences, putting you in touch with the things around you that you might have missed. Like every other Will Wright project, this one won’t make any sense until we see it in action.
Based on the info I can find, I’m not sure this is the bright future of gaming Wright seems to think it is. What about you?
