If you're a member of the iOS scene, chances are that you've probably wanted to downgrade your firmware at one time or another. After all, in many cases older firmware versions offer a more free-roaming environment susceptible to jailbreaks so there are plenty of reasons why people might want to revert back to something a little bit older. Apple won't allow you to do this through their own means, but lucky for you this quick guide can show you how.

As it stands right now, the iOS 6 jailbreak scene is really still in its infancy. Sure we can get tethered breaks up to 6.0.1 and the 6.1 betas, but who really wants to keep their supposedly mobile device that tied down to a computer? If you've installed one of these hacks and are feeling a little bit of buyer's remorse, I'll tell you how to reverse that bad decision. As has been true with all of the recent hacks, this tutorial is only applicable to A4 powered devices including the iPhone 4 or earlier as well as the iPod Touch 4G or earlier. Also, make sure you have those 5.1.1 SSH blobs handy before trying this at home.
- Begin by installing the latest version of RedSn0w on Windows or Mac
- Get the 5.1.1 IPSW for your device here
- Extract and run RedSn0w
- Navigate to Extras/Even More/Restore/IPSW and point the program to the software you just downloaded
- If you're using an unlock on your iPhone, click yes to prevent a baseband update
- Follow the instructions to put your device in DFU mode
- The exploit will be used and your SSH blobs will be located from Cydia. If by chance they are not found, you can point to them on your computer too
- Let RedSn0w do it's thing and in time you will have a 5.1.1 device
From there, you can decide what you would like to do, but as you probably know, there are untethered jailbreaks out there for you. Happy downgrading!
