Today iPhoneuseguide.com provides the answer to a common FAQ – what is the difference between tethered and untethered jailbreak? Let’s get talking about Untethered jailbreak first. Untethered in simple terms, actually means nothing to anyone. Before you ask me what that means, let me explain. With an untethered jailbreak you can boot normally on your jailbroken iPhone as you would do on a factory iPhone. Everything works properly on your iPhone. Tethered jailbreak on the other hand is completely the opposite. For various possible reasons you will have to use your computer to boot up your jailbroken iPhone each time. For example, if you jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with Snowbreeze 2.4 (yes, it’s out if you didn’t know) you will need to use iBooty on your computer each time you want to boot up. Similarly if you use RedSnow to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 then you need to launch RedSnow on your computer and then connect your iPhone to your computer to boot up. So this brings us to the next question- does a tethered jailbreak mean that you cannot reboot your iPhone if you don’t have a computer nearby? In short, yes. A tethered jailbreak is slightly undesirable as you always need to have a computer around you to be able to boot up if for some reason your iPhone shuts on you. You need the jailbreak tool on your computer to be able to perform a tethered jailbreak boot up. So what does that mean for people considering both jailbreak methods? Obviously, an untethered update is obviously not preferable. Having said that, if you are careful about your iPhone’s battery (i.e. make sure it doesn’t die) and are not using anything that can cause instability and lead to a shut down, then you will be fine with a tethered jailbreak. Currently for iOS 4.3.1 there is only a tethered jailbreak available. If you really want to jailbreak your iPhone then you should go for it. If you feel you are better off with an untethered update then you will have to wait.
