Is Apple Navigation Being Developed for iPhone 5?

Apple wants a few good engineers who know their way around. The company has posted four ads for engineers who have “experience developing navigation software.” This points to Apple building its own turn-by-turn navigation software that would end the need for Google Maps. The version of Google Maps currently available for the iPhone is hopelessly outdated compared to the newer app available for Android phones. The Android app includes turn-by-turn navigation, which the one for iPhone does not. Developing its own navigation software has obvious advantages for Apple. Building such an app into an upcoming version of iOS could eliminate the need for other navigation apps and make Apple no longer dependent on Google for this service. If it’s ready in time, navigation could be included on the iPhone 5, which is expected to come out in summer 2011, and also available as an upgrade for existing iPhones.

No doubt, the Apple development team will be looking at the latest upgrade to Google Maps—to see how they can improve on it. Google Maps 5 for Android caches your most-used maps for use offline, which could come in handy when you’re lost in an area with spotty service. It also has 3D and multi-touch features that allow the user to rotate the map and zoom in on buildings. Apple navigation software would be very bad news for the makers of stand-alone GPS devices, since iPhone owners won’t need them anymore.
