A progress report from id Software's John Carmack has given out a probable release target for  the App Store launch of Doom Classic, an iPhone and iPod Touch port of the original Doom game.

According to Carmack, he will be focusing on id's console title Rage for a while but he expects to be able to finish the game up and send it to Apple for submission to the App Store by next month. Carmack also gave out the following info regarding the release and the game's multiplayer features:

The initial release will be for OS 2.x, and support multiplayer over WiFi. A later release will be for 3.x only, and support bluetooth multiplayer. I looked into the possibility of 3G multiplayer, but the latencies just aren't good enough -- I see 380 or so pings from my phone to local servers. This was interesting, because I have talked to other hardware vendors that claim 3G latencies of half that.

The progress report also gives out some rather interesting factoids about the game's development as well as what they learned from the earlier release of Wolfenstein 3D Classic. It's a bit technical, but it's a great read. Check it out by clicking on the source link below.
