Skype Adds Video Calling to App

Internet phone company Skype was embarrassed by a widespread outage last week, but their users should forget quickly since the company has just released a new version of its iPhone app that makes it possible for owners of the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to make video calls via 3G or Wi-Fi networks. Neil Stevens, general manager of Skype’s consumer business, stated: “With video calling representing approximately 40 percent of all Skype-to-Skype minutes for the first six months of 2010, our users have been eager to get Skype video calling on their mobile phones. By bringing video to mainstream users at their home or work via their desktops, on the go with their mobiles, or into their living room via their TV, Skype has made it possible for millions of people to share video moments wherever they are.”

There are a few restrictions on video service. Not all iPhones are supported, just iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Video calling is available for 4th generation iPod touch with i0S 4.0 or above, but the iPad and 3rd generation iPod touch can receive, not send, video calls. Video call support is not yet available for Android phones, but that will likely come in the near future. Since Skype was one of the top five free apps downloaded to iPhones in 2010, this addition is sure to be a popular one. Download free at the App Store.
