Should You Buy Your Child An iPhone?

I think it's a good idea for children to have their own phone.  If there is an emergency it would make it much easier for them to contact you plus you can load the phone with apps that will provide your child an opportunity to grow their knowledge base.  But, there are a lot of questions that parents need to answer.  Should you give them access to games?  To texting?  Should it be an iPhone, or just a call-only phone with no texting, picture messaging, or other bonus features?

Children will always be children—they will always want to play.  Whether they are five or ten, if you put a phone in their hands, their bound to want to explore it.  What do you want them exploring? This is where the iPhone has an advantage over the standard cell phone:  educational iPad apps.  There are many of these applications to choose from.  Here are a few that you may or may not be aware of but will help keep your child occupied and educated.
  • ABC Go.  This iPhone app allows kids to explore letters and words while they get to play with vehicles.  Each time they get a new word, they get a new vehicle.  Wouldn’t it be nice if that was true in the grown-up world?
  • Bob Books.  With full-color animations, instead of shooting aliens, your child can be encouraged to read while still being visually stimulated.  This keeps everybody happy and the kids quiet.
  • ArithFit.  Instead of texting their friends, why not give them access to something to sharpen their match skills?
  • iLearn Solar System .  This app offers great graphics that will hold your child’s interest while teaching them about the solar system.  This is the science class you wish you would have had.

Don’t let this short list fool you; there are countless others available, and more are created every day. So, if you’ve decided to take the plunge and give your child an iPhone, you might want to make a visit to the app store and download some mother (or father)-approved apps that both you and your child will enjoy.  Now, whether that little iPhone gets to hop along in the school bag… you’re on your own on that one!
