Google Translate Comes to iPhone

Google’s Translate app has been available for Android phones for a while now, but this week a version for iOS devices was released. Unlike text-only translation apps, Google Translate lets users speak a word or phrase into their iPhones in one language and receive a translation by computer-generated voice or text. The app translates text for a total of 57 languages and lets users listen to translations spoken aloud for 23 of those. For 15 languages, you can translate the text by speaking it instead of typing it. Other valuable features include being able to view dictionary results for single words and phrases or short phrases and display translations in full screen mode. Alas, the one feature included on the Android version but missing on the iPhone app is Conversation Mode, which allows two people speaking different languages to converse while the app does the translating.

This is certainly one of the most useful free apps for those of us who live in cities with diverse populations, sometimes several existing within the same area. I wish I had Google Translate at my last job, so I would have known what my Spanish-speaking co-workers were saying behind my back and I could have ordered from those yummy Korean BBQ restaurants. If you’re actually traveling to other countries, don’t leave home without it!
