Verizon iPhone 4 boosts iPhone Sales over Android

Apple has managed to nab 14% behind Samsung (23%) and LG (18%). During the 1^st quarter, the iPhone 4 and the 3GS version were found to be the two most popular handsets in the market, followed by Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO 4G and HTC Droid Incredible. In a recent statement, Ross Rubin, the Executive Director (Industry Analysis) at NPD said that Apple and Verizon have had an extremely successful iPhone 4 launch, thereby allowing iPhone to expand its market. This is largely the case since this was previously being held back due to the prolonged exclusivity of the carrier- AT&T. Further, although a portion of the growth for the iPhone has resulted from eating into the Android sales; it has still been observed that Android continues to account for atleast half of all the Smartphones that were sold in this quarter.

Infact, the market share of Android OS marginally dipped from 53% in the 4^th quarter of the previous year to 50% in the 1^st quarter this year. On the other hand, Apple’s iOS has witnessed a substantial growth from a 9% market share to an impressive 28%. Moreover, RIM’s BlackBerry saw a drop from 19% market share to 14% market share. Finally, amongst all the phones that were purchased during the 1^st quarter this year, 54% of these were Smartphones – the first time that they have enjoyed the majority. The sales of Smartphones were up by 8% in the 1^st quarter and this was despite the fact that the overall sales of handsets this quarter were down by 1%.
