Is This Verizon's Data Plan for iPhone?

Verizon hasn’t even officially announced that they’ll be offering the iPhone in 2011, but there’s a new promotion that suggests the carrier plans to move onto AT&T’s turf. Verizon is offering an unlimited data and texting plan for smartphones that includes 450 minutes for $70 a month. There’s also a family plan for $140 a month. The offer is being sent to “select” customers, and those who call the number provided don’t get any definite information as to whether they qualify. Why all the mystery? Does this promotion have something to do with the rumors that Verizon will be getting the iPhone very soon—like early next year? This could be a ploy to lure new iPhone users away from AT&T, whose tiered plan charges $15 for every 200MB used, or $25 for every 2GB of data. AT&T has had a monopoly on the iPhone since its debut, and recently phased out its unlimited data plan. Is this a message to AT&T that they will have to come up with a similar plan to compete? It’s no secret that the AT&T stranglehold on the iPhone market has resulted in a lot of unhappy customers—just the ones most likely to jump ship as soon as their contracts are up if they can get iPhone service from a competing carrier. New iPhone buyers are going to be looking for the best deal and the most reliable reception. If Verizon can offer both, they’ll definitely be cutting into AT&T’s iPhone business.
